From .Net to .Com: Joe Rogan’s Domain

Imagine having one of the biggest media empires in the world…and operating from a .Net website. Well, for Joe Rogan, that was a reality. For more than 17 years, Joe built his empire on JoeRogan.net without even batting an eye at it.

But, even for all his fame and millions of fans, Joe Rogan (the Renaissance Man) couldn’t get the .com for his own name…because it was owned by another guy, also named Joe Rogan—(a Realtor based in Idaho). Eventually, after putting in enough elbow grease, Rogan (the Renaissance Man) secured the bag.

A Tale of Two Rogans

Rogan registered JoeRogan.net in 1999, building an impressive online presence that spanned millions of podcast downloads, a devoted fan base, and one of the most recognized personal brands in the world. But as his fame skyrocketed, there was one glaring omission: he didn’t own the .com domain for his own name.

Instead, JoeRogan.com was being used by Joe Rogan (the Realtor) for his real estate business. And, despite Renaissance Rogan’s ever-growing profile, Realtor Rogan wouldn’t budge. Negotiations reportedly went on "for some time," and in 2017, a deal was finally struck. The details of the sale? Shrouded in mystery. All we know is that the domain eventually landed in podcaster Rogan’s hands and began redirecting to JoeRogan.net.

JoeRogan.net Hits the Auction Block

But the domain drama didn’t stop there. In 2022, JoeRogan.net, the domain Rogan had registered and used for over two decades, expired and landed on the auction block at GoDaddy. The bidding was fierce, and the domain closed at an eye-watering $52,000. According to Archive.org, JoeRogan.net had been redirecting to JoeRogan.com, but it seems the expiration created a new opportunity for domain hunters.

At the time, the domain was still at ENOM, leaving open the possibility that Rogan could reclaim it. The hefty auction price is yet another reminder of how valuable domains can be—especially when tied to a major public figure.

A $250M Move

Since acquiring the .com, Rogan’s star has only risen higher. In 2020, he signed an exclusive $100 million deal with Spotify, solidifying The Joe Rogan Experience as the most popular podcast in the world. By 2024, Spotify doubled down with another multi-year deal worth a staggering $250 million. Owning JoeRogan.com has become more than a vanity project; it’s a crucial piece of Rogan’s brand in a world where every click counts.

Lessons from the Rogan Domain Drama

The saga of JoeRogan.com (and JoeRogan.net) is a cautionary tale for anyone building a brand—whether you’re a global media juggernaut or just starting your side hustle. The right domain name isn’t just a URL; it’s your digital storefront, and your first chance to make a lasting impression.

And if you don’t secure it? Someone else will. You might just find yourself negotiating with a realtor from Idaho.
